When you start a girl gang, what are qualities you are looking for? Do you want a diverse girl gang? One that will indulge your quirks (clean feet before bed and burnt cheese) but still drive you to be a better person, partner and parent. But where do you draw the line? Crocheting cat lovers? Mermaid and unicorn enthusiasts? I’m asking for a friend…who wants to start a girl gang.
Speaking of girl gangs, I am taking a minute to officially ask this week’s Mama Takeover guest to be my first ganger (in a completely professional sense, of course).
I met Sarah when we both officed downtown a few months ago. Before she and her partner stepped up their game and got a real store front with real big pretty windows, cool lights and a street sign (when you know you’ve made it). For realz, if you need a pick-me-up, just drive-by their street signs for a little chuckle. Too lazy? You can follow them on insta (Hello Holiday Omaha).
Sarah is one of those people who is so beautiful (as you will see), so sweet and such an amazing mama to her adorable baby boy. She also co-founded Hello Holiday located right here in Omaha. With what started as vintage inspired clothes has grown into a cult-like following of amazing styles from up-and-coming designers. Think nonsensical and hilarious t-shirts and beautiful apron-like dresses that your G-ma would have worn (if your Grandma was a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Kat Von D when she was young) and even fun tchotchkes for the home and office. Titanic lovers, you can even get yourself a Leo pin.
Since Sarah is genuinely as beautiful on the inside as on the outside, she agreed to let me interview her for this weeks Mama Takeover.
Tell us about YOU. Name, family, business.
Hello! I’m Sarah Lorsung Tvrdik and I co-founded an online retailer called Hello Holiday. I have two major hunks in my life: my husband Jon and my 1.5 year old son, Hugo!
How did you come up with Hello Holiday?
My business partner Megan and I were working late one night in her old office, a co-working space she founded and managed in downtown Omaha. She told her about how she was looking for a new challenge in business, and I told me that she wanted to start a new kind of retail store. My idea completely meshed with her background and passions, and we decided to go for it. We wanted to start the store that we always wanted to shop in. From there, it just continued to grow as we listened to the business and reacted to the customers.
What is your dream job?
I feel confident in stating that I have my dream job, but (there’s always a but), within my company, I see myself eventually moving into a Chief Creative Officer role, if I get to choose.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. I love everything I love, and am not ashamed for a second.
Biggest mom guilt confession?
Wait, am I supposed to admit that I’m not the perfect parent? *wink* Ugh, probably letting my son watch too much TV? He f***ing loves Sesame Street! I’m sorry. Today’s word is the letter F.
How do you balance work and play?
A year and a half into becoming a parent, I feel like I’m just starting to get a little work/life balance back. I even went on a weekend away with my partner a few weeks ago! I guess the best thing I can say is that there is no balance, but I enjoy what I do so much that much of it doesn’t feel like work. Don’t get me wrong, its work, but I’m lucky that I get to live out my dream.
Any fun life hacks you want to share (secret stain remover, how to distract a toddler for more than 2 minutes)?
When Hugo was a baby I used to put him in a high chair in my office and cover him with sticky notes. It would entertain him for 5-10 minutes. Where do I go to accept my mom of the year award?
What do you wish you would have known then, that you know now?
Never try to imitate your competitors. When you’re genuine, your customers can sense it and you will absolutely be more successful.
We updated our branding about a year ago to reflect the styling direction Hello Holiday had taken. We’re now a little less vintage-inspired, a little more vintage-modern, lots of ‘60s inspired pieces, funny prints, badass tees and some really smokin’ handmade lingerie.
What’s a picture-perfect day look like for you?
Mondays are my perfect day! Our Omaha HQ and showroom is closed, so I spend all day resetting my brain after a busy weekend and doing frivolous activities with my son. Having a non-weekend day as my day off really helps me feel refreshed and ready to kick arse on Tuesday.
What are some of your go-to beauty products?
Oooh girl, this is my question! Lancome Artliner and Hypnose Mascara, MAC Lady Danger Lipstick, Estee Lauder Maximum Cover Foundation and Prescriptives Magic Powder are my top 5, hands down. If I get a sixth, Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb perfume.
Where do you love to shop?
If you could give one piece of advice to another mama?
Don’t compare. You’re the best. You got this.
How do you manage being a mom and a wife or partner?
This is honestly a big struggle. I feel like there’s never enough time for both, but making time for each other is so important. The first 6 months to a year after Hugo was born, I had no balance here, but I think that’s something that just happens with new moms. It gets easier to find balance here with time.
What is your least favorite chore to do around the house?
What is one thing you have had to sacrifice for the sake of motherhood?
I have really long hair…its quite possibly touching my butt at this point, so I often have to sacrifice giving myself the perfect blowout (like I did back in olden days) for the natural dry (which looks like a worn out ’80s perm on me) or a quick dry which always ends up fuzzy. I did treat myself to a salon blowout this week and I probably won’t wash my hair for 10 days. C’est la vie.
What is one question you have for other mamas out there?
How in the hell do you potty train a toddler boy? I’m 110% dumbfounded about the whole thing.
Ok Sarah, you don’t have a choice. You are in my girl gang. And thank the unicorns for Sesame Street, right?! P.S. I am totally trying the sticky note distraction! Genius!!
Thanks so much Sarah! Now go shop Hello Holiday! Also, we may need you back with some hair and make-up tutorials. In the meantime, follow Sarah on Instagram @Fashflood.
